This late winter bloomer has large bright lemon yellow petals over a purple-red calyx creating a burst of bright yellow color in the landscape, where this witch hazel gets the name 'Sunburst'. While this witch hazel tends to have foliar spots, its benefits in the garden far outweighs this issue. Sunburst is a favorite among collectors and nurserymen and is perhaps one of the most desired bright yellow witch hazel selections.
This Dutch introduction can reach up to 12 ft in height in a vase shape by about 8ft wide. Originally 'Sunburst' was classified as an Hamamelis mollis, before the improved hybrids became known as hamamelis xintermedia. Sunburst is an excellent selection to place in the foreground of conifers and dark solid colors in the landscape. This allows the bright yellow blooms to pop during the winter and bring great interest to the winter garden.
